~~Almost~~ cut my hair...

In a half an hour, I’m donating the larger portion of my hair to Locks of Love. Right now I’m waiting for my ride. I guess I’ll finish and post this when I get back.

No one could ever fault me for hasty decision-making. I’ve been thinking about doing this for over a year now. Now I’m ready. And to my regretful future self: my hair is currently ratty and broken all underneath and on top from fencing and necklace-wearing. It is frizzy, fluffy, unmanageable and annoying. Having it in a bun makes me tilt my head at weird angles. The bottom is all split ends and scratchy on my back.

Ahem. Sometimes I think about my hair as being like its own element. I’ll look at it, flowing beside, behind, or down me, and it’s like its own little world, with its own life, and definitely its own moods and weather. Sometimes, when the light hits it just right, it’s a cascade of beautiful chestnut waves. Mostly, though, it’s a ratty brown rag that hangs around my head like so much pine straw.

Lately I’ve been thinking of my hair as being like a timeline. Like the rings on a tree; could you tell anything about my life by looking at the differences along the length of a hair? I measured my hair last night: 32 ½” from root to tip. Hair grows what, maybe 6” a year, give or take? That means the tips of my hair exited my scalp nearly 5 ½ years ago. I guess there’ll be about 12” left when she cuts it off. I’m not just cutting away dead matter, I’m cutting away 3 ½ years of my life. If I were hardcore I’d shave it, really start over. But I never have been one to really let go of the past.

ETA: Well, it's cut. The hairdresser said it was the best donation she'd ever cut ^^ There are indeed about 10 or 12 inches left--somewhere between a year and a half and 2 years. It's really weird feeling. My sister took a picture; I'll post it once I figure out how.
