mhuzzell: (Monty Python)
No, seriously. I've had a million and one things to do this past week, and I would certainly have gotten more of them done if I hadn't spent so much time on LJ and Facebook, or on message boards, or just looking up random crap. And let's not forget all that TV. Tonight I meant to finish unpacking and cleaning, but instead I've mostly just sat here and watched South Park.

But this is the last day. Steph told me the internet is leaving at the end of the month--so, any time now, I guess. I don't know quite when it cuts out, but I'm going away for the weekend, and I'm pretty sure it will be gone when I'm back.

Last summer, I was a lot happier during my first month and a half with no internet than in the 3 internetful weeks that followed. Of course, that may have had a lot more to do with the other things that were going on at the time. Still, there's something to be said for being forced to leave the house in order to check one's emails. Or just getting out in general.

Not that I've been completely holed up. I have been doing some things. Such as wandering the streets of St Andrews, handing my CV to any business that will take it. I like this system a lot better than back home. As painstaking as the CV-making process was, it's a hell of a lot less hassle to just hand them to people, rather than filling in useless applications at every single place that says they might be hiring.

Then again, I lost this whole afternoon of it, since I had to be in Cupar to apply for a National Insurance number. I have to have one in order to work, but technically I'm supposed to have a job in order to get one. Lovely. And it only took me several phone calls and repeating the same information about 5 different times to set up an in-person interview so I could tell the woman there the same information I'd given before on the phone. It's no shock to me that it was a British person who came up with 'Vogons'.

Fucking government. You know, I wouldn't even mind the endless bureaucracy so much if it actually functioned. [I lie, I would, but bear with me for this rant.] I phoned the NI people about 3 weeks ago, and they said they'd phone me about the interview. I called them again on Tuesday to see if I had missed their call while I was in the US. Turns out they had just taken down my phone number wrong, and could I come to an interview on Thursday? I guess it worked out. But it's messed up everywhere. When I was at the Jobseeker's office for the interview, I overheard one of the people who worked there explaining to one guy how they had messed up all of his information, and how she was trying to sort it out and maybe they might be able to, just stay here and wait a while longer. Damn.
