mhuzzell: (Monty Python)
Ugh. Today was the worst day ever recently. One of those where all the little things go wrong.

I'm supposed to be writing about Possible Worlds... damn Philosophy. I thought I knew what I thought, thought I had an opinion and could write what should be a short, easy essay about it. Then I started reading.

Which brings me to the point of the entry. On Tuesday I was in Chequered Court, reading William Lycan's chapter in Micheal Loux's anthology about possible worlds. I complained about a large passage of untranslated Latin in a footnote, and the following conversation ensued:

Dave: "Why don't you just learn Latin, then?
Me: "I tried, but my school stopped teaching it after a semester, and switched to French."
Dave: "Wow, that's... sensible. French is actually a living language."
Me: "Of course, I remember more Latin than I do French... but I do know Pig Latin."
Dave: "Pig Latin's not a real language."
Me: "Sure it is."
Dave: "Adding 'ay' to the ends of words doesn't make a language."

Well, the rest of the chapter contained several more phrases of untranslated latin--though these were short enough that I could mostly puzzle them out--and one French phrase, 'façon de parler', which I'm assuming means 'figure of speech'. However, it also contained a full sentence of untranslated Pig Latin--and salient to the point, as well--but fortunately I'm fluent :P

ETA: So... I haven't written anything yet. I've spent a lot of time procrastinating, though, and have learned that
